COLOMBIAN GOLD

Gold has been one of the most important metals for the development of Colombia and remains one of the main elements of the country’s mining basket, an important pantry thanks to its geographical location: between mountains and with robust water tributaries.

In 2020, Colombia reached a production of 47.6 tons of this resource, 29.9% more than in 2019, when that indicator was 36.67 tons. In the year of the pandemic, exports of the metal were the highest reported since 2017.

During the first quarter of 2021, higher production volumes were recorded compared to the same period last year, a figure that went from 9.53 tons to 11.71 tons, but far from the 13.9 tons in the fourth quarter of 2020.

“Gold strengthens the country’s international reserves. It is vital for the economy in monetary terms, it implies the presence of the State, it generates productive chains, employment and an important fiscal income.”,

explains Eduardo Alfonso Chaparro, mining analyst.

The calculation of the National Mining Agency estimates that an annual production of 40 tons can be maintained for the next 14 years, as a way to take advantage of the mining potential of the territory, which is due to the country’s location in the Cordillera de los Andes.
